Lion Music Update 12-07-2011

Details of our upcoming 19th August 2011 releases.

Vargton Projekt – ProgXpriMetal
Released 19th August 2011
LMC307 / EAN6419922003077
Available on CD & Digital Download

Lion Music are proud to introduce the debut release “ProgXpriMetal” from Vargton Projekt, a new band based around some of the finest musical talents to have emerged in recent years from Sweden in guitarist Mats Hedberg, Grammy winning drummer Morgan Ågren and vocalist Björn Jansson set for release on 19th August 2011.

“ProgXpriMetal” as the title may suggest is a varied and special release that will satisfy the extremist metal and hard rock fan and Zappa freaks too with its wide ranging sound.

The seeds for what would become Vargton Projekt started 2006 when Mats Hedberg (BFH) contacted Morgan Ågren (Frank Zappa/Mats Morgan band) to collaborate together after hearing his drumming on a Fredrik Thordendal (Meshuggah) album. Mats sent some rough demos which caught Morgan’s ear and the pair decided to collaborate on an album together.

Recordings started 2007 in May at Morgan’s “Studio Annanstans” (Stockholm/Sweden) where all drums and basic guitar tracks where recorded. The sessions continued on five other occasions throughout 2008-2010 by the end of which the recordings where ready to be mixed in September 2010 at OSD studios (Bologna/Italy) by Nicola Venieri, and was mastered in march 2011 by Claes Persson at CRP studios (Stockholm/Sweden).

The original thought for the album was to be an instrumental CD but Mats had an idea to ask one of Sweden’s finest metal vocalists Björn Jansson (Tears Of Anger / Ride The Sky) to put some vocals on selected tracks with the result in Mats’s own words being “Amazing!”. Keyboardist Hans Lundin (Kaipa) was asked to play on 3 tracks and another important element for the sound came from the animal voice of Percussionist Giovanni Imparato (Paco de Lucia) from Naples. Alessandro Gwis contributed additional basic keyboard parts and some electronical stuff which added a further dimension to the music whilst Lars Eric Mattsson performs some guest guitar solo duels with Mats on track 7.

Stylistically “ProgXpriMetal” is high output heavy guitar and drum oriented music with modern nods to the likes of King Crimson and Mahavishnu Orchestra. Yet there are also deft moments of subtlety and atmospheric passages all of which manages to sound open and inviting to the casual listener.

Vargton Projekt have produced an intoxicating blend of progressive thinking and intelligent design and make “ProgXpriMetal” not only one of the most original releases you will hear in 2011 but one of the most musically satisfying.

Lion Music is proud to introduce the release of a special edition of Sonata Arctica guitar whiz Elias Viljanen’s 2002 debut solo release “Taking The Lead”.

This new special edition re-release sees the original 12 track instrumental tour-de-force packaged with the added bonus of a professionally shot previously unreleased 7 track live DVD entitled “Evil Spirit Live” which contains material from Elias’ 2 solo albums released on Lion Music.

The live DVD is something long requested by fans of Elias’ solo works and we are proud to be able to introduce this added bonus which allows guitar fanatics worldwide the chance to experience Elias formidable technique live and up close.

Some 9 years after original release “Taking The Lead” is still regarded as one as one of the best debuts of instrumental rock/metal guitar to have emerged in the 21st century from a then unknown guitarist, and Elias has built a reputation that has seen him advance into the upper tier of hard rock shredders founded on the solid foundations of this debut solo release.

Fans of highly charged guitar instrumentals will find much to enjoy within “Taking The Lead” thanks to its heavy dose of melody intertwined with the thrilling guitar flash and virtuosity for which Elias is known. The quality of material saw the album upon original release end up with a top 10 rank in guitar9.com’s 2003 end of year best sellers chart. The album even attracted the attention of one Steve Vai who had gotten hold of the album and subsequently sent Elias some positive feedback on the release.

The new dual CD+DVD version of “Taking The Lead” hits the streets on 19th August 2011.

Consortium Project V – Species

LMC305 / EAN6419922003053
Available on CD & Digital Download

Consortium Project is the brainchild of vocalist/producer Ian Parry, a singer blessed with one of the most distinctive voices in metal and one that powers along “Species” – the epic conclusion of the Consortium Project series set for release through Lion Music on 15th July 2011.

Consortium Project V “Species” is a culmination of brutal but melodic gothic-power metal at its best. Packed full of powerful songs and first class musicianship, it’s a fitting end to the pentalogy of critically acclaimed Consortium Project releases.

As on previous Consortium Project albums a line-up of some of the most notable names in progressive / power / gothic metal circles provide the potent performances on the album. Guitars come from Stephan Lill (Vanden Plas), Niels Vejlyt (Infinity Overture) and Veith Offenbächer (Dawn of Destiny). Bass tracks are performed by Kris Gildenlöw (Pain of Salvation) and Jens Faber (Dawn of Destiny) whilst Casey Grillo (Kamelot) performs all drum parts. Ian is also proud to introduce newcomers to the CV ranks in female vocalsts Lene Petersen and Ani Lozanova (Ani Lozanova Project) along with keyboardists Kalin Jechev (Ani Lozanova Project) and Peter-Jan Kleevens on keyboards.

The worldwide release of “Species” marks the 21st album release from Ian Parry celebrating a career of over 25 years in the world of rock & metal. A career which has seen classic albums from Elegy, Ayreon, Vengeance and numerous guest performances in addition to the Consortium Project album series. In this final instalment the story sees “Species” take mankind on a final epic journey into outer space met with dire consequences the world has never seen.

Consortium Project V “Species” is the ultimate combination of the strongest songs to date written by Ian Parry, brought alive by commanding performances from some of the best musical talent in today‟s rock/metal scene. These qualities add up to make this final album the ultimate Consortium Project release.

In addition Lion Music will be re-releasing remastered and enhanced versions of the first 4 Consortium Project releases beginning in late 2011.

James Byrd’s Atlantis Rising – Beyond The Pillars
Released 15th July 2011
LMC304 / EAN6419922003046
Available on CD & Digital Download

Lion Music are proud to introduce some true musical treasure in the form of this special release from the early days of one of the worlds most accomplished guitarists, James Byrd. A name synonymous with some of the finest guitar work committed to tape, this unique release is an album any fan of the former Fifth Angel guitarist will have been longing to hear and serves as a reminder of just how good a songwriter and musician Byrd is.

Comprised of 14 never before heard performances and 7 new songs, “Beyond The Pillars” is -literally- a lost album. The material’s origins date to when James Byrd began writing and recording with vocalist Freddy Krumins within days of departing Fifth Angel in the summer of 1987, with much of the music material Byrd had originally intended for the second Fifth Angel album.

Like Deep Purple’s “Smoke on the Water” release, “Beyond The Pillars” was recorded on location. Brain Storm Productions mobile captured the band’s magic at the infamous Music Bank sound stages in Seattle Washington from the fall of 1987 through the winter of 1988. Fans of Byrd’s solo debut “James Byrd’s Atlantis Rising” (Shrapnel Records) will recognise 7 of the track titles on offer here. However the versions here showcase a rawer, heavier and more immediate delivery to those that were later re-recorded on the now out of print “Atlantis Rising” release by Shrapnel Records. Further treasures are revealed in 7 never released songs rich in diversity and depth that make this a “must own” part of any Byrd, or indeed Fifth Angel’s fans music collection.

The forgotten masters that make up “Beyond The Pillars” were undiscovered until early 2011 when Freddy Krumins was going through a box of old tapes. Regarding the discovery of the recordings, James Byrd comments, “I was shocked to have had these masters turn up, and then to hear the quality. I had long forgotten the sessions after almost 25 years of other musical activities. Everything sounds better than I could have imagined and I think my playing was on a higher energy level than what later ended up on the J.B.A.R. debut. I knew it needed to be heard”.

On the musicians’ aim almost 25 years ago Byrd recalls, “The goal was to create a musical statement which was melodic and dynamic”. This material’s character is further shaped by a lyrical content which blends tales of lost love, with Greek mythology and fantasy all powered by the sublime vocals of Freddy Krumins, himself a student of legendary vocal tutor David Kyle (who also coached the likes of Geoff Tate/Nancy Wilson/Chris Cornell etc).

“Beyond The Pillars” sounds like no other album from an American group before or since. The combination of European influences by groups and musicians such as Scorpions, UFO, Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow, Uli Jon Roth, and James Byrd’s decidedly classical influences, is such that “Beyond The Pillars” captures the energy of a newly formed group ready to take on the world.

From hard driving dark tracks tracks like “Chasing The Shadows”, to power ballads like “I’ve Got To Find You”, and lush instrumentals such as “Requiem Atlantis”, this album showcases a level of maturity and sophistication seldom heard from any band, let alone a new one from America in 1987.

BRAND NEW RELEASES

VIRTUAL MIND – SHATTERED SILENCE

COMING VERY SOON ON I-TUNES

VIRTUAL MIND are a progressive metal band formed by guitarist Francesco Fareri. The Debut album coming out soon is a mixture of heavy metal and progressive style with actual lyrics and personal events that influenced the total songwriting. Francesco wrote all music and lyrics trying to create something new in this genre of music.

The band is composed by Francesco Fareri 7 & 8 string guitar, renowned singer Titta Tani (ex DGM, ex Astra, Ashent etc), drummer Dario Ciccioni (Twinspirits, Empyrios, Empty Tremor, Khymera etc) and bassist Emanuele Calvelli (Noumeno).

Everything happened when Francesco left his last band and was searching for a singer with powerful and delicate colours of the voice and so he met Titta Tani. In few weeks Titta reviewed the songs and gave some good feedback so Francesco and his close friend Mauro Tonelli started to work on lyrics. Meantime Emanuele recorded all the bass tracks and Dario Ciccioni programmed drums exactly as he could play them. Over the following weeks the album was recorded, mixed and mastered and picked up by Lion Music for release on their digital album network in mid 2011.

OUT OF PRINT RE-RELEASE

LARS ERIC MATTSON – ETERNITY (2011 VERSION REMIXED & REMASTERED)

Available now on iTunes at:

http://itunes.apple.com/album/eternity-remastered/id439748101

1988’s original version of "Eternity" marked the recording debut of guitarist/composer Lars Eric Mattsson. What this early release for Europe and Japan lacked in production budget was more than made up for in the strength of song. The album them got a revamp in 2001 when Lars saw fit to completely re-record the album for its 2001 re-issue for CD on Lion Music. Now some 10 years later having been out of print for a few years, and after numerous requests for a re-release Mattsson decided to improve the sound further for this new digital only version.

"Eternity" in 2011 has seen a remix from the earlier re-recorded 2001 version and has also been remastered to provide optimum sound for the digital age. With all guitar, bass and keyboard instrumentation coming from Lars Eric Mattsson, Bjorn Lodin (Baltimoore) provides the albums gritty vocals whilst long-time Mattsson associate Eddie Sledgehammer performs drums.

Stylistically the album harks back to the age from when the material was penned (mid 1980’s) and showcases a neo-classically accented hard rock/metal sound. Fans of Mattsson’s more progressive leanings will still find plenty to savour in the lead guitar work on offer. Whilst the dark mystical metal leanings of the song craft lend the album a quality along the lines of 80’s classic Dio, Yngwie Malmsteen and early Europe making this one re-issue not to miss.

Lion music update 21-05-2011

Borealis ‘Fall From Grace’ out today

RELEASED 20TH MAY 2011

LMC301

EAN6419922003015

Order direct at http://www.lionmusic.com/cd/fallfromgrace.htm

With soaring vocals, lightning fast guitars and a rock solid backline, BOREALIS is bringing leather back and dragging power metal up with it. It’s been that way from the start for these Canadian guys: all or nothing, and it shows in their music.

Musically, BOREALIS leans towards the classic power metal sound; not too far removed from bands such as Evergrey or even Savatage in their prime. Also, the more progressive bands like Vanden Plas or Dream Theater occasionally spring to mind. It’s all about energy, aggression, melodies and finesse – and BOREALIS has it all in spades.

With an independently released debut "World Of Silence" safely in the bag, the band took it upon themselves to give ProgPower USA one heck of a kick-start when they visited the world famous festival in September 2010. With a 45 minute set comprised of songs from both the upcoming disc "Fall From Grace" as well as their debut, they made sure all 1,100 people in attendance would leave with a positive memory of BOREALIS.

"Fall From Grace" sees Borealis take a heavier approach for their label debut along with a more mature and progressive spin put on the songs when compared to their first appearance, but the bands song writing process in which every idea is explored and considered has not changed. On the new material bassist Jamie Smith comments, "We feel that because of song writing process this is a very diverse, energetic album. Lyrically, a few avenues were explored for the album, taking a more ‘real life’ approach than was taken before. Again, a collaborative effort on the lyrics ensured that they fit the music perfectly and reflected every band member’s tastes in their own way".

Produced and mixed by Jodan Valeriote in Ontario, Canada and mastered by Tomas Johansson at the world famous Panic Room Studios in Sweden (known for a.o. Scar Symmetry, Warrior Soul, Miseration), this album is a sonic masterpiece. And topped by the fantastic artwork by Frank Fiedler, the entire package comes off as one of this year‟s most impressive power metal releases.

Borealis’ forthcoming offering "Fall From Grace" is sure to see the buzz generated by both their debut album and ProgPower USA performance continue, and will certainly reach a larger audience world-wide come 20th May 2011 on Lion Music.

The album also showcases some home-grown Japanese talent in new label signing, progressive rockers Early Cross, whilst the direct influence of the aftermath in Japan can be heard on Jennifer Batten’s track ‘Sakura Season’ was written after her visit to the country in April 2011.

Virtuoso guitarists unite for the closing title track which sees solos from Milan Polak, Francesco Fareri, Daniel Palmqvist (The Murder Of My Sweet), Simone Fiorletta (No Gravity), Dave Martone, Borislav Mitic, Franck Ribiere (Double Heart Project) and Lars Eric Mattsson.

Elsewhere the album is full of excellent new tracks that run the gamut from heavy and powerful to tender and emotional across a number of rock and metal styles.

Millions have been affected by the tsunami following the massive earthquake off the coast of Japan and all artists involved and all staff at Lion Music hope that the revenue generated from this release will hopefully make some difference to those affected who look to ‘Embrace The Future’.
